The Impossible Possibility

Do you want to hear something impossible?

One time a tennis student came to me and told me he wanted to turn pro.

There were only a few obstacles.

One, he’d never had a ranking of any kind. (Junior rankings always come before pro rankings.)

Two, he’d never made Varsity on his high school team. (Wait, what?)

Three, he was already eighteen years old (At least ten years past the deadline for wanting to turn pro).

What would you say? How quickly would you let him down easy and direct him to a nice career in accounting?

That would have been the kind, smart, thing to do.

But I’m not smart. I did the opposite.

And five years later I got the call from France telling me he’d just gotten his first world ranking.

Impossible.

How did he do it?

While it was true that he was an off-the-charts athlete with gorgeous strokes, those things weren’t getting him close to the pro tour.

He was still failing.

But then something switched.

His mind switched.

Suddenly he realized, “If I stop putting pressure on myself and let my strokes speak for themselves, I can win.”

He started trusting his game (his system) and took a long-term mindset.

I’ll keep hitting it in and see where it takes me.

It took him on a rags-to-riches ride I’ve never seen before. Or since.

Or ever.

Doing the impossible was possible. It was available to him all along.

If he changed his mindset.

It’s the same for trading.

Here’s a system with impeccable fundamentals. It’s based on trend following methods that have been around for decades.

And it could hypothetically make a trader rich.

It could hypothetically turn a $40,000 account into a $300,000 account in less than two decades with no compounding.

If a trader compounded the gains, it would turn that sample account into $4 million.

But, unfortunately, it’s impossible.

It’s impossible exactly the same way that turning pro was impossible for my student.
